Government raises concerns regarding security challenges of Blackberry services

30.07.2010 (UNI) The government said it has once again raised its concerns with the Canadian company Research In Motion about the security challenges its Blackberry services might pose and hoped it will soon address them.

‘We have raised the issue. They (RIM) have assured us that they will be soon sorting out the monitoring issue,’ Special Secretary, Home Ministry, U K Bansal told reporters.

There had been concerns that the Blackberry services pose a security threat because of high encrypted data sent on RIM devices.

The Government has already warned the company of closure of its services if intelligence agencies were not able to access to the encryption key or location of servers in India. It had been insisting on a monitoring system for its emails and SMSes to be in place in view of security concerns.

Post Mumbai attacks, the Ministry had asked mobile phone operators to provide more details about mobile phone users or risk being banned.

The United Arab Emirates has also raised security concerns on Blackberry smartphone services. UNI
