7.12.2010 (UNI) The Supreme Court today quashed the Rajasthan government's notification providing for reservation in promotion to SC/ST officers in government service.

A bench of Justices Altamas Kabir and Cyriac Joseph upheld the judgement of Rajasthan High Court and dismissed the appeal filed by the State government.

The Supreme Court agreed with the High Court's findings that reservation can be provided only at the time of recruitment and its benefits cannot be extended during promotion.

Such a policy of giving reservation in promotion shall be counter-productive as has been held by the Supreme Court in a number of judgements, the order said. UNI
