Armed Forces Tribunal Bar Association

Lawyers practising before a newly created Armed Forces Tribunal have formed their Bar Association, office bearers announce.

The Bar Association of Armed Forces Tribunal of India (BAAFTI) was formed in a general body meeting of practitioners held in the central hall of the Tribunal complex, the statement said.

Office bearers were elected unanimously to run the Association pending next elections to be "completed by" May 15, 2010, the statement said.

They include : A K Bakshi, President; V S Tomar, Vice President; and Priya Ranjan Prasad Singh, General Secretary. The meeting was attended among others by Rajesh Mishra, a member of the Bar Council of Delhi, it said.

Inaugurated last August by President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, the Tribunal is an original as well as appellate court for more than two million serving and retired defence personnel.

It has a principal bench in New Delhi and eight regional benches in Lucknow, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Chennai and Kochi. Justice Ashok Kumar Mathur, former Supreme Court judge, is its Chairperson.
