INCLUSION OF KEVAT CASTE IN ST LIST IN MP

December 20, 1999

The Union Minister of Tribal Affairs, Shri Jual Oram, has informed the Rajya Sabha that the Government of Madhya Pradesh has not sent any proposal to his Ministry to include the caste of Kevat and similarly known castes of Mallah, Bhoi, Majhi etc. in the list of Scheduled Tribes.

The Majhi community has been specified as Scheduled Tribe in Madhya Pradesh and Bhoi community has been specified as Scheduled Tribe in relation to the States of Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram. The caste of Kevat and Mallah have not been specified as Scheduled Tribes in relation to any of the States, the Minister added.

This information was given by the Union Minister of Tribal Affairs in reply to a question from the Hon'ble Member Shri Raghavji in the Rajya Sabha here today.
