The Rhodes Scholarships
The Rhodes Scholarships owe their origin to the remarkable vision
expressed in the will of Cecil J. Rhodes, British colonial pioneer
and statesman who died on March 26, 1902. He dreamed of bettering
the lot of humankind through the diffusion of leaders motivated
to serve their contemporaries, trained in the contemplative life
of the mind, and broadened by their acquaintance with one another
and by their exposure to cultures different from their own.
Under this scheme six Indian scholars get funded annually to study
Pure and Applied Sciences, Law or Medicine (2nd Bas/Masters)
at the University of Oxford.

Inlaks Scholarships
Mr. Indoo Shivdasani founded the Inlaks Foundation in 1976. He
was the son of a member of the Indian Civil Services. He and many
other members of his family were educated both in India and in the
UK. After Cambridge, rather than following his father's footsteps,
he became an entrepreneur, setting up his own business. Within a
few years his business had worldwide interests in agro-allied industries,
finance, industry and trade. He considered his Cambridge education
as having been paramount in broadening his productive and cultural
life and believed therefore in the importance of higher education
overseas for the young people.
The Inlaks Foundation was created in 1976 to incorporate the existing
philanthropic work of its founder in India, and to provide a permanent
and independent body for the continuation and expansion of these
activities. The mission of the Foundation is to look for exceptional
talents among young people expressed in more than the traditional
ways, and to provide the most appropriate assistance for the development
of such talent. For this purpose the Foundation has developed a
Scholarship scheme to support young people for their higher studies
or training abroad. The Foundation also supports projects and provides
scholarships with in the Country.
Subjects covered are: Architecture (except Urban Design), Communications
(film/Television), Special Education, Fine Arts, Applied Arts and
Conservation, Design and Fashion Design, Theatre and Dance, Music
and Law: Level: 2nd BA's/Masters/Research Proposals
Inlaks Foundation provides the following scholarships in India and

Seattle, Washington, USA announced a donation to the University
of Cambridge of $210 million to establish the Gates Cambridge Trust.
This benefaction creates in perpetuity an international scholarship
programme to enable outstanding graduate students from outside the
United Kingdom to study at the University of Cambridge. The Trustees
are required to award scholarships on the basis of a person's intellectual
ability, leadership capacity and desire to use their knowledge to
contribute to society throughout the world by providing service
to their communities and applying their talents and knowledge to
improve the lives of others.
The Trust expects there to be of the order of 230 Gates Cambridge
